Russia launched one of its most devastating aerial assaults on Ukraine's capital in recent months, leaving at least 10 dead and more than 100 injured in Kyiv. The large-scale missile and drone attack, which began overnight and continued for over nine hours, caused widespread destruction across the city.
According to Ukrainian officials, 440 drones and 32 missiles were deployed, with a significant portion targeting residential areas and key infrastructure. A nine-story apartment complex in the Solomyanskyi district was among the hardest hit, with more than 40 flats destroyed. Emergency services continue to search for survivors trapped beneath the rubble.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the death toll and noted that a 62-year-old American citizen was among the casualties. He condemned the use of cluster munitions, accusing Russian forces of intentionally maximizing civilian harm.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that dozens of sites, including homes, schools, and critical infrastructure, sustained damage during the assault. He explained that early casualty estimates had to be revised due to the difficulty of identifying victims in the aftermath.
President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as "one of the most terrifying" since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. Speaking from the G7 summit in Canada, Zelensky denounced the strikes as "pure terrorism," accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of escalating violence simply because he retains the resources to do so. He urged world leaders not to turn a blind eye to the suffering of innocent civilians.
As explosions echoed through Kyiv in the early hours of Tuesday, residents were forced to seek refuge in underground shelters. Continuous air raid sirens throughout the morning further hampered rescue efforts.
In a separate incident, drone strikes in Odesa killed two and injured ten, while Russian-installed officials in occupied Donetsk reported a Ukrainian missile strike that left at least 10 people wounded.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the attacks targeted Ukraine’s military-industrial infrastructure and asserted that all objectives were achieved.
In response to the intensifying conflict, the United Kingdom and allied nations are expected to announce a new round of sanctions against Moscow, aiming to maintain pressure on the Kremlin.
Zelensky had planned to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump during the G7 summit to discuss additional support for Ukraine. However, Trump's early departure due to the Middle East crisis left the meeting uncertain, dealing a potential setback to Ukraine’s diplomatic outreach.
As the war grinds on with no resolution in sight, both sides continue to exchange deadly fire, with civilians increasingly caught in the crossfire.
